SEARCH FOR AN INTEGRATED COVERING IN THE REGIONAL IMAGINARY

The mendrisiotto is characterized by small and medium-sized settlements crossed by the most important north-south connection axis of Europe, both by motorway and by rail.
The small villages saw great commercial and industrial development in the late 1900s that led to the construction of large warehouses along the connecting axes in total contrast with the typical local architecture.
It is not possible today to dematerialize the industrial and commercial dimensions of large buildings to integrate them into the landscape context dotted with small villages, so the research of this project was aimed at understanding which type of coating can leave the dimensions unchanged without seeking unnecessary formalisms and at the same time to integrate with the regional landscape.

The local elements of reference are the small and medium-sized buildings in the agglomeration of the city of Mendrisio, the large strip of the highway and the slopes of Mount Generoso.
Small to medium-sized buildings are the typical urban image of Swiss cities.
The highway and railway connection axes represent a considerable wound in the panorama, which on the one hand are a symbol of progress but on the other are read as negative elements which, together with the surrounding settlements, represent the source of disturbance.
Ultimately, the tree-lined slopes of the mountains that embrace the valley in the Generoso area are the predominant panorama of the whole canton of Ticino.

The project intends to cover the facades of the shed with a vertical natural green cladding, in order to integrate the large surfaces in the most interesting landscape context.
